SPEAKER_04

Very physical football teams, very well coached. It definitely prepares you for the playoffs. We don't run a hype machine up here in the Midwest. We believe everything's earned not given. And when we fall short, we say we fell short. We don't cry a river, whine, and complain. And that's why we're the best.

SPEAKER_01

SPEAKER_07

It is Foster and Friends for another weekend as we are in the dog days of summer. And uh I don't I should have counted the days before we launch today, but we are what three weekends away. August 29th is when football kicks off, and that's why today's show is called The List. Bud and I are gonna wow you with knowledge we don't have. You know, it's gonna be good. But it's good to see your smiling face.

SPEAKER_08

You too, Mac. Yeah, and welcome back from your uh your trip uh across the southern part of the country. And I know you guys wanted to make a special trip and show your lovely Y V New Orleans. So uh how was how was your trip, man?

SPEAKER_07

Well, that was great. Destin, Florida first, a couple days there, which is really neat, a couple of good restaurants, the boardwalk. I I don't, you know, I get tired of the tours a little bit. And then we we headed to New Orleans uh and uh and stayed there a couple of days, came back through Pensacola and uh and stayed in Pensacola and the the sugar white beaches at 7:30 in the morning is something special, uh, you know, with the golf and the waters warm. But getting back to New Orleans, you know, I've been there a couple times, like you, and uh, you know, I've done the Bourbon Street thing. My wife being from Belgium, speaking French, and there was a lot of Belgium influence in the in jazz, uh the invention of the saxophone. So she just just loved it, loved it, loved the desserts, loved the crawfish, loved the beans and rice, loved the music, loved the bars, loved the, you know, just every every place we went in. I think every store, every voodoo store, we got uh we had a tarot, what are they called? Tarot cards or whatever they are. Oh, yeah, yeah. I had a reading that just proved that I'm as dumb as I ever was.

SPEAKER_08

Well, I hope they says you're gonna live a long and prosperous life.

SPEAKER_07

She said she would never predict that. It was some lady she had four teeth and sitting in the middle of the street, and for 20 bucks, she told me, I'm not gonna tell you when you're gonna die. Oh god, that's great, that's good. I I appreciate that. But you should move forward. You're a Gemini, you need to take care of your financial uh affairs. I went, okay. So, you know, it's but it is, it's like a Disneyland for adults for sure. Um, and uh tell our audience one quick story because Bud Bud had enough time when he's the many times he's been there and played, you know, sugar bowls and bowl games and playing Tulane. And as I said, I've been down there a couple times, a basketball tournament, whatever. And Bud texted me and he goes, Have you found the swinging lady yet? I said, Yes, I have.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

So that bar, it's the the something, the Western saloons is something, something boot scooting bars. Yeah, I gotta say I can look it up. But yeah, there's a yeah, there's a swing there, and the the yeah, so they're you know, they're still throwing beads, people are still yelling from all over, and people are still sleeping in the street. But New Orleans, with all its culture, is still a very special. It's a very special place with a lot to do. There's a lot to do, and we ended up staying at a place called the Bourbon Hotel. Imagine that. I thought of you, and so, but for a hundred and thirty dollars a night, it couldn't have been more special because you know when you get it the Florida, the Pensacola's and Destined of the World 350, 400, 600, depending on where uh you know, per night. This place was 130 per night, and it was a five-star.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, probably was had a nice was charming and had a name just a little charm about it, the courtyard, all right.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, and then the one conversation, you know, I always was interested in Katrina ever since Katrina hit, and you know, who was affected or whatever. So the first bell captain, when we got there, and he's taking us up to a room, he said, Yeah, I used to work for um whatever it was, XYZ, one of the hotels downtown. And he said, Me and 28 people who were staying at the hotel during Katrina got airlifted off the roof of the hotel to get out of the Katrina mess. And I went, Airlifted? He goes, Yep, helicopter came, and then it came back and came back, took care of 30 of us to get I got so the the Katrina stories, and then I, you know, I saw a big map and I talked to a guy about all of that, and you know, got where the river and all the, you know, I just wanted to get the rundown of that. But overall, as I said, great place to visit, don't want to live there, you know. It's uh, and we went to the worst time, you know. July, it's uh it's pretty hot.

SPEAKER_08

I was gonna ask how how was the weather?

SPEAKER_07

Was it stifling hot or was it uh forecast today? 95, 95 humidity. Forecast. Yeah, there you go. Chance of rain, 95 degrees.

SPEAKER_08

Well, I know you're a music guy. Did you uh did you listen and get a chance to see some good music?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

You can pop in every bar or every restaurant. I mean, there's gonna be live music play at those establishments.

SPEAKER_07

Everybody, everybody passes the hat, everybody uh you know has a bucket, and uh, and and then to see Preservation Hall, and there was a guy there who was 94 years old, and they do a 45-minute set. We sat front row. Preservation hall was a special because it's just so uh iconic and and so historic and whatever. And I had a chance to talk to a couple of people, they like talking to to fans and stuff, and um, yeah, Preservation Hall was was pretty great. And then I got to on a on the strength of a couple of ice tees and the fact that we met this blues guy who plays from noon to seven o'clock at night, six days a week, at a pl at a bar called Bourbon Heat. And um he uh was so good that he let me he let me do a a uh uh John Lee Hooker uh oh cool thing.

SPEAKER_08

So did you did uh did V video that by chance?

SPEAKER_07

Uh I have kind of a recording. I played it this week on our local uh our our radio uh network with Joe Thomas and Stanton, and then some people wrote in and go, Matt, you can't sing, don't even try, you know.

SPEAKER_08

Well, I was gonna say, I we need to you need to send that to me, and then let's evaluate if we want our listeners to uh you know get a get a taste of Matt's results.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, it was um but there was a crowd, it was kind of crowded, and the guy was really good. And he he said, you know, I was saying just singing all this stuff. He was he was so good. And he said, Um, do you want it you want to do a song? And I go, Really? On Bourbon Street, I get a chance to sing with a blues guitar player one time? It'll be the last, you know, sure. Okay, why not? You know, he made up a song about V and Peltum, and he, as I said, it was really, it was really good. Okay, uh, college football, back to college. So I'll decide whether I'm gonna send you the uh the the soundboard version of uh of that. All right, so we have a lot to cover today, a ton of stuff. Top five college football weekends, strength of schedule, how much your roster costs, uh, and what to eat and drink when you build your tailgate. This is kind of our first college football edition. So we'll go to break and we'll come back. It's fostering friends, a reunion tour. It's called the lists, and we dive into list number one in the top 25 when we come back. Stay with us.

SPEAKER_08

Hi, this is Bud Foster for Envision. For over 30 years, my good friends, Dr. Scott and Becky Mann, have built a practice that truly cares about their patients.

SPEAKER_00

I can just remember being pregnant with my first son over 30 years ago, and we bought the practice from Dr. Henry Stewart, who'd had it for 50 years. Was scary, but we've moved forward and we're actually in the same location, and now we're up to seven doctors and over 25 staff in the two locations.

SPEAKER_06

The technology is amazing. Uh we used to take pictures on literally Polaroids, and now we went to digital, now we have widescreens, and um, we can do things today that 10 years ago were only images you could only generate maybe at a teaching hospital. And now we can do those chair side when our patients come in.

SPEAKER_08

Go see your award-winning Envision team. They have two locations, Salem and Christiansburg. They will meet all your eye care needs.

SPEAKER_03

You know, it's based on if you do this, then that. If this, then that. Man, if if if we got that one more yard and one, they love you. But you came up one yard short, they hate you.

SPEAKER_01

Foster and Friends is presented by Envision. Locations are in Christiansburg in Salem, Virginia. For the best in eye care and fashion, it's Envision.

SPEAKER_07

Welcome back, Foster and Friends. It is the list as we prepare for college football 2026. Hard to believe it's here. There, you know, there's probably more talk about the NFL right now than there really is college, but boy, right around the corner and everything that's gonna happen. So, Bud and I wanted to break down a couple of lists and uh we're gonna look at the top 25 and uh and what's gonna happen. We're gonna get into roster costs and also some of the you know the best weekends um for you to earmark and circle the calendar. But when when a poll is released as a coach, are you h I mean in especially today's uh day and I've heard coaches say, well, with a CFP, if you're in that first poll, you're almost in the playoff. Yeah, which is not really true because you could stumble throughout the but the first coaches poll, and of course the sports writers poll, which will come up, the first coach, is it good to see to see your school there? I mean, do you want to be in that first poll to be recognized?

SPEAKER_08

Well, I I remember reflecting back when we had our program rolling. Yeah, I mean, we wanted to be, I mean, me personally, I wanted to see that. You know, I mean, that makes a statement about what people think about your program and what you what you're building and that type of thing. Um you know, I always said this to the players though. We we had a burning. We would take our we would get all the magazines, all these preseason rankings, you know, like ad I was always a big into collecting like the the sporting news, the ammo, yeah, Bill Steel, yeah, yeah, you know, all those. I collected all those. Yeah, and read, I want to know. I mean, I'm just it was a junkie, you know. But also I want to know what they were saying about us in our competition and that type of thing. But and then obviously our players read that. And now with social media the way it is, they don't you don't have to do that. But what we would do, you know, yeah, if we were ranked, you know, preseason number 10, let's say, you know, it's not where you start, it's where you finish, you know. This was uh this is a compliment to our program, but they don't know who we are really when it's all said and done. But we would have a burning. I would take all those uh programs, all those uh magazines, any of that stuff, and we would have a burning. Oh, once you read them all, once you and then I'd have that about because that doesn't mean anything, you know, it's just what the you know what they're gonna say about us at the end of the season. You know, we've got to write our it's a new it's a new story. Uh you know, each week's a new chapter, and you know, we've got to, you know, we're gonna build our story and and it's what they say about us at the end of the day. That's awesome.

SPEAKER_07

Would you take one of the would you take one of the articles and put it in the lunch pail? No. Okay.

SPEAKER_08

We were gonna build it, you know, we were gonna build our story with the lunch pail, though, because we were, you know, we were putting things in the pail as the season went along, you know, sure. Different things. And uh, but no, it was just uh I think it's like I said, it makes a statement about your program, what people think about it, you know, and then the challenge is to stay there because once you get once you get to this point, then you've got a bullseye on your chest too. Because everybody's gonna you're you know, you're the target now, you know, because you you that's you're the because anybody's above you, you're the underdog. Yeah, that's kind of how I always kind of played that role as much as I possibly could.

SPEAKER_07

Well, certainly the co the coach's top 25 represents really almost, and we're gonna in the next segment, we're gonna talk about the cost of football rosters now, but it almost represents who are the big spenders. And I won't give it away until our third segment, but you got Ohio State, Oregon, Georgia, Texas, the top four, Notre Dame at five, and then Indiana, Miami, Texas, AM, Oklahoma, and O'Miss. There's your top 10. Three Big Ten, five SEC with Miami and Notre Dame thrown in as far as your uh top 10, just uh and FYI, Virginia Tech, and Virginia uh got some votes, uh got some points uh from the votes. Virginia got 40 Virginia Techs in there at 12. You got Florida, South Carolina bubbling, uh, Vanderbilt Auburn, just right outside uh the top 25. But Ohio State right now is the number one team with uh with Oregon, and they are gonna have a showdown, uh, which we'll get to as well when we start talking about weekends. Um, Ohio State, the real deal?

SPEAKER_08

You know, they have been for the last hundred years. I mean, they they uh and it's gonna be interesting. You know, they got a good quarterback. I mean, obviously they got one of the best playmakers in the country at wide receiver. Um they just they've stockpiled talent and uh they've just got a great program. You know, they really do, they've got a great culture. And the other, I think you know, they're the they're the program right now um that I think everybody aspires to be, kind of like what Alabama was under Nick Saban, or um, you know, you uh what you know South or Southern Cal was under Pete Carroll, or uh, you know, you just um Ohio State though has been that consistent program since I've been alive. You know, and uh they have been that and and they have been particularly since this NIL era too. Uh and uh but you know, you've got the largest um alumni base in the country, you've got the Big Ten has the most billionaires, you know, uh in the country. And and uh but it's um it Ohio State, I think, is the um you know is the program that everybody aspires to be right now.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, and one of the top three spending schools, I'll let that little cat out of the bank. Well, for the first time in 15 years, now Miami, uh we'll we'll talk about the canes in a little bit. Uh for the first time in 15 years, Dabo Sweeney and Clemson is not in the top 10. They are the 23rd ranked team. And Dabbo, of course, stood up ACC Media Days and said that look, his identity is the same, and he realizes that his faith will get him through each season.

SPEAKER_03

You get a lot of love and you get a lot of hate in in this um this world, uh this, especially this uh journey that we that we are on. You get a lot of love, you get a lot of hate, and I've had a bunch of both. Um enough for a lifetime. All of that stuff is circumstantial. You know, it's based on if you do this, then that, if this, then that. Man, if if if we got that one more yard and one, they love you. But you came up one yard short, you they hate you. And you know, that's all circumstantial.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, and so with all the storyline, and and bud, when we talk to our students at the Dan Patrick School, we always talk about storylines of the top 25 and moving into the college football uh 2026 year, there are of course a million storylines, the new coaches and you know what's going to happen and Franklin attack a big storyline. Uh uh I mean, we can just, you know, just grab whatever storyline you want. Clemson is definitely a storyline. Dabo, I think, has got to have a pretty good year, I would think.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, uh, you know, I mean, their trending the last couple years is, you know, going down. And uh, and I don't know if that's because of their lack of evolving, you know, in this day and age of the portal and the NIL. I mean, I I know people will look at it probably their NIL money is decent. Uh, but Gabo's been has been not a um has not taken advantage of the portal, I think, when they could have potentially, you know, and uh and if they gets caught up with them, obviously they've lost some good players and haven't replaced them with the same caliber of players maybe that they've lost. But uh no, I think Clinton's again is one of those places that has high expectations. And uh just like any place, if you're you they're not gonna accept being mediocre. And uh I don't care what your name is, and and I'm not don't I'm not sounding sacrilegious, but I know I I prayed for a lot of wins over the years and never came through, you know. So have them good luck with that, man. You know, I know. Um, you know, and uh I wish y'all the best with that. And uh, but um, you know, it all comes down to those Jimmies and Joes you got, you know. Um, but uh and then the and being able to coach him up. And uh uh but anyway, there's a I think there's some pressure on on Clemson because of their expectations.

SPEAKER_07

No, good stuff. I'm not sure, yeah, like you. I'm not sure the big guy upstairs uh really is a diehard college football fan.

SPEAKER_08

Or is he a Clemson fan? I don't know, you know. I don't know. I know there's times I thought he was on our side, you know. There's there's a lot of times it's like, what happened, brother? You know?

SPEAKER_07

And uh yeah, a lot of Sunday conversations is what uh Bud is saying. All right, we'll we'll uh go to break, we'll come back, and we will take a look at strength of schedule and also what does it cost if you want to be relevant? And I also, but um footnote, I'm gonna look at the top 12 now. I'm gonna save it and we're gonna see who makes the college football playoff of the original uh and the first uh football poll of the uh top 12. If you look at it now, boy, it's a heck of a playoff. All right, we'll go to break, we'll come back. Foster and friends, the list, and we'll continue right after this. The first legal distillery in the Radford City limits, River City Distillery, specializes in handcrafted vodka and the smoothest you will find anywhere. As a matter of fact, Win Vodka being made right there at River City Distillery supports Bud Foster's Lunch Pail Defense Foundation. Master Distiller Charlie Cosmano's business model was simple: make the best vodka and gradually build a portfolio to include bourbon, American single mold whiskey, and other craft spirits. Residents from all over Virginia traveling to Radford to see the distillery, take a tour, try a tasting, and meet Charlie. See the River City Distillery Facebook page. Fascinating, refreshing, live music right there on Main Street in downtown Radford. And don't forget, ask about Rusty Rabbit Bourbon. You're gonna love the River City Distillery. Tell Charlie that Bud and I sent you.

SPEAKER_01

Foster and Friends is presented by the River City Distillery in Radford, makers of Win Vodka in Gentleman's Journey Bourbon. Once again, here's Bud and Mac.

SPEAKER_07

Welcome back. It is Foster and Friends. That was the voice of Mario Cristobal talking about the Miami culture. We'll get into that in just a little bit. Miami is a uh top ten team, um, and they are in the with top uh top ten as far as strength of schedule. The FPI index, which is the football power index um that uh ESPN uses, uh, and I guess the committee, but and you can help me answer this question, the committee, if they had to break a tie in the CFP, they would be interested in the FPI, right? The football power index.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I mean, I I would I would say so. I mean you know, there's so much parlay into your strength of schedule within your in the conference too, you know. And as I just look, you know, I'm I'm more tied into the ACC and and that type of thing. And and you know, it still comes down to me uh how many quality games do you play, you know, and uh and then quality wins that come out of that. Now schedules are what they are, they're made in advanced sometimes and and it is what it is. I think I know I'm just looking at Virginia Tech schedule. I mean we've got a challenging schedule. You play, we've got eight bowl teams, you know, from a year ago on this schedule, you know, and uh and Virginia's got six, you know, on their schedule from a year ago. I think you have to parlay some of that into that. And then where do you play the games? I know like tech this year, and I'm not looking at you know any of the top 25 per se, but you know, we play at Miami, we play at SMU, we play at Clemson. You know, you we're playing at Cal. Yeah, which is an up and coming, you know, they're talking about Cal like they're talking about Virginia Tech a little bit as a next up and comer. We've got Georgia Tech and Pitt who were both in the hunt, you know, and have one conference, you know, Pitt won has one conference title here within the last couple years. We've got I mean we've got a challenging schedule when you start and I don't know how that compares then to the the rest of it. But the bottom line is this I do think strength of schedule is important. But you also have to look at what the strength of schedule is within your each conference I think to rate some of these um you know these schedules as well you know to because they're all relative within their league to compare to other leagues in my opinion.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah all right well it it's Ohio State Texas Notre Dame the top three as far as the power index Oregon Georgia Indiana follows Miami Alabama uh at eight LSU is nine and Texas Tech rounds out the top 10 as far as uh strength of schedule and again it's it's interesting now we've looked at the top 25 now we look at the football power index and as we transfer into okay well let's see what teams are paying for rosters okay according to college front office are you ready for your top teams as far as expenditures Texas number one at just under 48 million for their roster Miami at 44 Ohio State 43.5 LSU and Oregon are tied at 42.8 and Notre Dame rounds out technically the top six but top five at 40 point four so I guess if you're in that 40 million neighborhood bud you're supposed to be good yeah you better yeah you better I mean and you know that those are it's that's that's the amazing thing of to me uh just what people are you know what they're spending and and who's who's buying you know when it's all said and done I mean that's to me right uh you've got you know because that's coming from third parties and and um you know I just uh it's just interesting this you know to see the investment that these programs or people are investing in you know with the players that they're investing in but that it goes to show you to be a top tier program um I mean I'm looking at the top 25 I'm looking at a different list it's uh called the football team valuations but you know you start talking about uh the top 25 the UCLA on this particular one's 25th at 24 million now you start getting into that 24 million there's gonna be a bunch of schools that you're splitting hairs between 24.1 24.4 24.3 you know what I mean but when you start getting up to that 30 million plus that's where the Tennessees you know the Indiana's the Oklahoma's and above the people that we mentioned above the Georgias Michigans Alabamas Ole Miss and then you get into your you know Texas AMs and our other the other ones you just mentioned those are the ones though that are have been competing in our in the con or in the playoff situation. But they shouldn't be they should be yeah other interesting note sorry to interrupt you other interesting note is that the conferences the average are all pretty jumbled and in the low 20s because because you've got your butt I don't want to say bottom feeders but the other school big 10 average 24.4 million big 12 21.6 ACC 21.2 yeah as far as the uh the average of all all the schools i find that a bit a bit interesting where you got miami at the top of the ACC spending you know over 40 or whatever and the bottom Boston College is at 18 so you see your average and your median is going to be like the ACC Carolina's at 218 Georgia Tech at 217 Pittsburgh at 212 Virginia at 21 uh even Virginia Tech at 219 uh Virginia Tech's fourth in the ACC so to me that's kind of an interesting it is because you know it's and that's goes down hopefully the top your top upper echelon programs what they're spending and they should be those those those top tier programs.

SPEAKER_08

You know you look at the Big 10 I mean you get you know from Indiana Michigan USC Ohio State Oregon then after that you're still in that like you say in the middle of the road it goes from 23 to down to 17 million you know so it's into that but it's it's it's upper tier driven and I'm sure without looking at the SEC I'm sure that's the same way just like you know looking at the ACC it's going to be you've got a few schools but then that more often than the case it's and that's what makes it competitive and I think that's what the drive is then for the future in this you know this sports act that everybody's trying that we're trying to pass and get through to Congress you know is to put a hard cap on all this and to get it to where it's going to be competitive and then get back like it is in the NFL but then get back to who's going to outrecruit who's gonna outcoach instead of who's gonna go outpay. You know and the people who want it can participate can participate but still that's what it comes down to who's gonna be able to outcoach and outrecruit and and outplay people that's kind of what it's always been about. Right now this last window has been about who can outpay people for the best roster possible instead of going out and you know out recruiting and out coaching them once all said and done.

SPEAKER_07

Now you now you've made me think of another thing I have to keep track of this year.

SPEAKER_08

How many of the 20 something million rosters uh will pull off upsets over 40 million dollar rosters yeah you know how many times is that gonna happen it's gonna happen it's gonna happen quite a bit you know it really is because money doesn't money doesn't I mean money gives you a chance yeah it doesn't it doesn't buy success though I mean you've got to go earn your success and uh you know but I will say this these programs with that are spending money they've got some of the top coaches in the country and they're not gonna no there you go they're not gonna let things just you know they they understand the const they they understand the process and what people are saying and the fight and the struggles and all those type of things it takes to be successful.

SPEAKER_07

Well shoot I I thought I had a uh an edge for hard rock uh hard rock app uh Saturdays but I guess not okay so Mario Cristobal who just got the extension he just says we we've got a culture we've got the roster there's no reason why Miami can't win for us it's as simple as this for us our culture is this will sum it up it's it's everybody for everything every single day there shouldn't be any misconception or misunderstanding as it relates to that and that all that means is nothing but your best will be good enough.

SPEAKER_02

So we feel strongly about that it is led by them they hold themselves and their teammates to really really high standards for pretty simple.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah code speak no I will say this about Mario you know he's done it the right way at Miami you know you look back at his early track record at Miami it's it's you know the the he had to make sure that the donors and the alumni base and the former players all you know because Miami is that culture too but they had to understand let's trust the process here. I'm gonna build this thing the right way and we're gonna make you proud and that's where and they they gave him some time you know and Miami's been one of those places that had but he's one of their own and they gave him a little bit of time to have some success you know and build this program. And I think that's a good model to look at. Now obviously they've they've created a you know a a great environment and and have uh a donor base that's been very supportive and a lot of places are like that. Look look at Indiana I mean my God just was I mean they've been the losingest program in the history of college football. Then you know Signeti comes in in two years they're in national champs. You know uh it's but it you can you can change a culture but also the the momentum that that brings all of a sudden too when there is a there's success and how this thing can snowball and that's you know what happened here in our time at Virginia Tech when we had a great run. I think it's getting ready to happen again under the Franklin era. But there's other programs that are fighting that too but it still it goes back to uh you know uh Mario built this thing and did it the right way you know and he is built in a building a culture. Yeah and um so that's that's that's for a lot of the fans and the alumni bases out there just trust the process it's not going to happen overnight you know and he built this thing the right way and and now they're reaping the you know the rewards of that by creating a culture that still is a a key ingredient in success of a any organization once all said and done but any team.

SPEAKER_07

Very well said I just have to say that was very well all right speaking of Kurt Signetti since Bud brought it up we'll go to break we'll come back what did Signetti say that that ticked off the football the SEC football world we'll talk about that when we come back. Fostering friends the list on the NSB Radio Network when you walk into a restaurant say your favorite pizza place what's the first thing you notice the way it smells the vibe maybe the party atmosphere if you're traveling in Southwest Virginia or lucky enough to live in the Radford area hopefully you have visited Brickhouse Pizza a staple since 1972. Fresh food, cold beer, great times that's Brickhouse Pizza 311 West Main Street in Radford and when we fall short we say we fell short we don't cry river whine and complain and that's why we're the best.

SPEAKER_01

Foster and friends is brought to you by Brickhouse Pizza in Radford Virginia Brick House means great times.

SPEAKER_07

Once again here's Bud and Mac Welcome back NSB Radio Network Foster and Friends uh Butt and Mac having fun with this uh it's called the list um before we get into some of the top college football weekends uh this year Kurt Signetti and I'm gonna play the sound bike Kurt Signetti ruffled a lot of feathers in just his Kurt Signetti way but he was just speaking his heart and mind in regard to 10 Big Ten football during Big Ten media days you've probably heard the bite seen the bite but this was the best of Kurt Signetti very physical football teams very well coached it definitely prepares you for the playoffs.

SPEAKER_04

We don't run a hype machine up here in the Midwest.

SPEAKER_07

We believe everything's earned not given and when we fall short we say we fell short we don't cry a river whine and complain and that's why we're the best he is the best absolutely don't you just love Kurt I mean he didn't care about anything just win.

SPEAKER_08

But he won a national title so he can he can say that and you know but he's been on he's been with coach Saban and that staff and in that league and uh you know it kind of it is what it is you know and that's the one thing you do like about Kurt Signetti and that's what you liked about Nick Saban. What you saw was what you get you know and uh and that's what he is but uh there was some truth in what he was saying too and whether that's creating a rivalry now uh you know that's that's gonna be something down the road as we move forward particularly with the writers from the Midwest which is mostly Midwest driven um but uh no I I thought that was I watched the whole uh you know that's the one thing I've been able to do I've been able to watch all these media days and that type of thing and a lot of BS right we know that yeah I mean that but for him to step up and and you know stand on the table for the Big Ten that was that was awesome.

SPEAKER_07

When coaches are when coaches are zero and zero uh they can you know it's uh it's one of those things all right a couple of weekends to circle um that are just gonna be dynamite um before we uh get into uh when we uh uh in our final segment today we're gonna tell you what to drink what to eat and what to play on your uh boom box week seven uh ohio state at Indiana Notre Dame at BYU Bama Tennessee Michigan Penn State just a couple and I'll I'll give you some ACC weekends too uh week six Georgia Bama Texas Oklahoma South Carolina at Florida USC at Penn State now granted the guy who did this uh where I ripped it off uh you know big ten SEC bias for sure um week two NFL the NFL week one with Oklahoma at Michigan Texas Ohio State Iowa State Iowa like anybody cares about that but I do all right uh week 10 this is where it gets good not only rivalry week week 10 because we're getting close now to the playoff but Bama LSU Georgia Omis BYU Utah Michigan Michigan State Oregon Ohio State Miami Notre Dame so just that that might be the you know of all the weeks you're talking about you know the early you can you can lose in week zero or week one yeah and still win a national championship you know what I mean the Ohio State proved that when we beat him you know back in the day and and uh but those those games at the end oh yeah those are the ones that you know you start separating uh the teams you know and uh uh and that's where it'll be interesting we talked about looking at the top 12 in the preseason poll a lot of those teams are gonna be playing each other as the year goes along so I think some of those teams will be knocked out because what projected to be a 11 and one or 10 and 2 season could turn out to be a you know you lose a couple close ones uh it could be eight and four nine and three and is that going to be good enough to get you in the playoffs good point by the way explain something why do we why do we call the 29th 28th 29th 30th of all why do we call that week zero I don't know I don't know I guess because the official starting day is like you know that September 5th this year but anything prior to that is like okay all right whatever yeah labor day weekend's gonna be pretty good especially uh uh which Florida State Bama uh on the 19th um uh as far as the ACC week five Miami Clemson UVA Florida State week six Virginia Tech at Cal uh week seven Florida State at Miami uh week eight Virginia Tech at Clemson um but here we get it yeah so here we get into the um uh this is let's see I'm looking at uh Thursday the 6th November oh that's at first of November Virginia Tech at SMU Miami at Notre Dame um so yeah there's gonna be uh it's just the way now the now especially and with television coverage and the way the the the the networks have put things together because the network has such an impact but every weekend now and especially with the CFP every weekend it's got yeah every weekend is big you know and and uh and that's that's the key you know every game matters and that's how it should be I mean and and that's where they're talking about I think and and I don't as the playoffs may expand that these games mean less sometimes no they're gonna mean more because it it's they're gonna be critical every every game is critical you know to particularly when you you start talking about a playoff opportunity you know and um and that's what it's that's what you want when it's all said and done. And when we get ready for the Labor Day weekend which is a little later on Friday the 4th of September Miami at Stanford and then Saturday is is pretty big Clemson at LSU will be at night and then on Sunday LSU at O Miss Monday night SMU at Florida State pretty good Labor Day weekend I mean yeah when does uh when is the Virginia NC State game I know that was September 29th the 29th okay because that's that's a conference I know last year that was not a conference game I think this year since we've gone to nine is that considered a conference it is it will be back into uh a conference they're playing this one at UVA but uh yeah that'll be a key game because I think uh you know obviously UVA is trying to ride this wave that they're on in NC State yeah you may have one of the better quarterbacks in the country you know in CJ Bailey and and uh and uh they're always a team that you gotta you know gotta prepare for because they're gonna they're gonna be well coached once so that's another key game I think in kicking this thing off too gotta play yeah and and after all if you lose your opener don't don't cry me a river uh that's uh Kurt Signetic that's the best all right when we come back Bud and I are gonna tell you what to eat what to drink and what to listen to that's all part of college football and we wouldn't let you hang. We'll be right back. This is Foster and Friends NSP Radio Network.

SPEAKER_08

Hi this is Bud Foster for Envision. For over 30 years my good friends Dr. Scott and Becky Mann have built a practice that truly cares about their patients.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah we just try to do everything with the patients in mind. Everything we do is from the patient's point of view and we try to put them first and really have state of the art equipment and technology and then old fashioned personal care and attention.

SPEAKER_00

So it's it's more like a family environment and that we do care about providing the best vision care available.

SPEAKER_06

Over 30 years ago we started with one office one staff member one doctor and we've just kind of grown from there. The community's been great in supporting us and now we have two locations we're getting ready to add our six and seventh doctors and about 25 staff.

SPEAKER_07

Go see your award winning Envision team they have two locations Salem and Christiansburg they will meet all your eye care needs and all around friends have settled down foster and friends and you heard number four as we bump back in uh all my ratty friends Hank Williams Jr. It's number four on the top five tailgate songs that you should play. Of course in your Alabama it's Leonard Skinner and we know that sweet home Alabama but uh I'll give you the top here also the top five tailgate drinks this is for Bud and then he's got a surprise for me. Here are your top five tailgate libations okay number five spiked sweet tea number four whiskey lemonade number three on your tailgate these are the top drinks that are served number three the Moscow Mule number two the bloody mary and yes a tribute to Tito's and Wynn vodka of course thanks to uh Mr.

SPEAKER_08

Cosmato the screwdriver is the number one tailgate drink of all time now you have a little different opinion of that right you know you know I hit I mean I hit I've just kind of could you know and I'll say this I'm new to tailgating myself I understand I'm a novice when it comes to tailgating because I was always on getting prepared in my previous six years. This is gonna be hard to believe this will be year seven for me. So I had to throw that out so this is really year for me in tailgating but no I I had all those and I anything with vodka particularly vodka I love I've got uh I've got my own mix I've I go to I go to sonic and get the um grape slushy they've done Away with styrofoam cups. What the heck's all that about? I mean, all these places have done away with styrofoam. I don't know what that does to the environment, but we need to bring that back just for tailgating, you know. But anyway, no, when I first uh stepped away from coaching, I went to this and I bounced around some tailgates, and then I stopped to this one. Somebody reached out to me and said, Coach, you got a minute to come by, we we gotta celebrate our Bud Foster drink. So what it was, and it it wasn't bad, but I just not want it. They would mix a Budweiser and a Foster's lager, and like in a little shot glass, and that they drank that was the Bud Foster. They said that that tailgate had been drinking the Bud Foster four years, you know, knowing that we were gonna play great defense and that. So that's uh I do have a not only uh you call me the mayor, there's a drink named after me around the uh the area.

SPEAKER_07

Well, uh when I saw I went to the Georgia, Florida cocktail party when I first moved to Florida. I I I saw things and I I mean I you know spent four years in a fraternity. I I thought I had seen everything, but you go to that Florida, Georgia game in Jacksonville. I saw I saw things I'd never seen before, and just you know, people what they were drinking and other okay. Here are your uh top five uh tailgate foods, real quick: five turkey sandwiches, four chili, three pulled pork, two chicken wings, one brats and burgers, and one of your top, which is gonna uh take us out of this segment, that one of the top songs at number three, Toby Keith Red Solo Cup.

SPEAKER_08

So that's I didn't even I didn't have that, but that's perfect, you know. That is perfect, yeah.

SPEAKER_07

And I bet you have number two. Thunderstruck is that is my number two.

SPEAKER_08

That is my number two.

SPEAKER_07

There you go.

SPEAKER_08

So that's number one for me was inner sandman, you know.

SPEAKER_07

Well, of course, that only makes sense, and that happens at the Virginia Tech Tech. As I said, if you're in Alabama, it's a little uh, you know, sweet home Alabama, and you just hear it uh absolutely everywhere. So, anyway, number five is Crazy Train for All My Rowdy Friends, Red Solo Cup, Thunderstruck. And then if you want to go rap, all I do is win. Uh, you know, so there you go. That's it. If you're gonna party your uh your fanny off, it should be good. Well, look, this has been fun. We are now tearing into we're we're uh next week, another week closer to uh to college football. Bud's got a lot of exciting stuff to uh tell us about, too, with the lunch pail. Um, a lot of stuff coming coming up with Bud's foundation. So, hey, it's good to be back. I'm glad that my feet are on the ground after uh after New Orleans, believe me.

SPEAKER_08

Well, this is an exciting time. You mean college football, they start practices across the country. Obviously, the NFL has started. You know, for us football junkies, this is an exciting time.

SPEAKER_07

Hey, everybody, have a great weekend. Uh for Bud Foster on Mac McDonnell, and that's Foster and Friends. And this is the NSB Radio Network.

SPEAKER_05

Hey, Red Solo Cup is cheap and disposable. In 14 years, they are decomposable, and unlike my home, they are not force is presented by Envision.

SPEAKER_01

Locations are in Christiansburg in Salem, Virginia. For the best in eye care and fashion, it's Envision. By the River City Distillery in Radford, makers of Win Vodka. It's a good day to enjoy a win. And buy Brick House Pizza. Brickhouse Pizza means good times.

SPEAKER_05

Well, that my friends is quite yucky. But I have to admit that the ladies get spitten, admiring how sharply my first name is written on you as a sharp.
